The "Dragonrider" Trope

Post by IgneousCroc »

Hello hello everyone! Been a hot minute since I posted anything here but, to be perfectly frank, I live a fairly uneventful life that doesn't lend to a lot of forum-post-worthy moments. :think:

In any case; The other day I was wandering through a bookstore (FNAC, for reference), idly perusing the books and I passed by the A Bowl Of Mac And Cheese section*
[*"A Bowl of Mac And Cheese" is a humorous term parodying the very popular and common naming conventing of a specific type of Young Adult Fantasy Novel, echoing G.R.R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire that may very well have started the trend. They follow a "A (noun) of (noun) and (noun)" title, usually set in a high-to-medium fantasy medieval-western-europe setting and usually include some manner of romantic subplot
]

There was one with a dragon on the cover. Wow! There was a whole series with dragons on the cover! Wowza! Could the moment when the Temeraire series is finally translated to my native language have arrived?! Maybe a new Inheritance Cycle book, somehow?!

Nay. T'was a book series called "Fourth Wing". From the blurb on the back it seems to be three main things:
a) A dragonrider trope book. This is the main point of this post but we'll get to it.
b)A "magical school" trope book.
c)A coming of age story.

None of which really interest me all that much anymore. This may seem hypocritical of me, since on my "to read" list there does feature a book called "To Shape A Dragon's Breath" , but the overabundance of Dragon-rider books started sort of grating on me?

The book has to be really, really! well written for me to give it a chance, is what I mean. Or at least defy expectations in an interesting manner. The How To Train Your Dragon BOOKS, for example, deal with proud dragons who aren't just going to roll over and be treated as pets, no sir. The dragons in Temeraire are more like flying battleships than the pony-type that has been the object of my chagrin, and they are sapient and intelligent individuals with their own personalities.

Sometimes it feels as though the authors just wanted cooler horses, but they also disrespect horses with this association (who are wonderful animals with also their own personalities) and just wanted cooler cars that can breathe and excrete, I suppose.

I know I'm prime to be offended by pony-type dragon steeds, prideful dragon as I am, so what's YOUR take on this, fellow forum goer?

Not Falcon but another alter in our system. We generally are disappointed by dragon rider books and would like more dragon books from the dragon’s perspective:,) We understand and hold space for those who enjoy dragon rider books but generally don’t relate to them and find them somewhat disappointing.

Seconding y'all both
Nothing against dragon rider lovers, but I too din't care for the trope.

I want books that are like "normal" ones except everyone's a dragon, not a human

Romance, Si-Fi, historical fiction, murder mysteries, you name it. Make everyone a Dragon, have them interact in draconic ways, and I'll be happy :)
