worked with my dad to refurbish an old pc to an usable condition. it came with one spinning disk hard drive with windows installed on a tiny partition with only like 2gb of extra space. ntfs wasn't doing wonders on that old drive so we installed linux on it and suddenly it works like a charm.
turns out steam now comes with a WINE-based thing to crosscompile windows games to linux (thanks steam deck) and it can run games again! ouuggh this is tempting me to switch to linux on my home computer even though it's a real hassle...

Oh dang no way! Nice! What kinda specs does it have?
Steam has gone a long way in getting games to work on the Linux platform, and I hope it continues to get better as time goes on
This is the only reason I haven't fully switched yet Don't get me wrong, I HATE Windows, especially with the direction Windows 11 has been going, but when it comes to my personal PC, I just want it to work Linux always breaks when I need it to work the most, and it's always a hassle googling the issue and trying 12 different fixes before the problem resolves itself
yeah it can really be a mess but I'm starting to think I should try switching to it anyways. my daily driver is windows 10 and they'll stop supporting it soon, and my computer can't run windows 11 anyways.
could go fedora linux just to make sure I have new features for steam and stuff, or just debian if I want something stable. I don't really enjoy the default desktop environment of mint and don't think I want to bother with rolling release things.

I’m in the exact same boat as you We got til July 2025 to figure something out. I am NOT going to Windows 11, I’m genuinely debating if it’d be better to run Unsupported Windows 10; maybe they’ll pull an XP move and continue to support it for another 5 years
I haven’t tried pure Debian before, but I have used it’s derivatives Ubuntu and Mint. Knowing how much support those two have given to .deb installers that might be a good way to go.
I did try Fedora in the past, I think it was Fedora 30? I spent almost a full week trying to get it to detect a mouse before ditching it Fedora’s actually a main reason I’m hesitant in getting into Linux as a full time daily driver; that experience was just that bad to me.
ough that does sound like it sucks. I think I'll try fedora and if it doesn't work out I'll try a more stable distro. I have some history with ubuntu but would prefer something else, at least with linux there's much to choose from

welp that went as bad as it could've had. I have some pretty uncommon old components in my pc, some of which are slowly failing. turns out no distro runs stably on it, and after days of effort I returned to windows 10. feels bad, but also I definitely got hubristic with how well linux worked for me previously.
fedora was too unstable to update or install drivers, the mint installer always crashed, ubuntu didn't even boot from an usb, kde neon crashed often. nobara almost worked but randomly froze with no clear fix TvT
maybe I'll try again with a new computer, but I don't think mine can run any linux distro
